Chapter 12

Hours later, the full darkness of night had fallen upon the outskirts of Durango. I was still sitting in a tree I found that allowed me to pull my legs up and hide. I felt like such an imposter cowering in a tree. It wasn’t in my nature. I was supposed to be a hunter. And I was getting hungry. I hadn’t seen or felt any sign of hunters nearby, or anyone at all, for that matter, in quite some time. I ventured down to see if I could find food without having to resort to stealing or begging.

Hopping down from my safe haven above ground, I scouted my route through the forest at the edge of the park. I could make out the street I had been on earlier. People still milled about, but most were patrons of the taverns, which could be their own kind of trouble. The chilled air had a bite this late at night as the weather descended into fall. I jumped around to get my blood flowing. Sneaking through the copse of trees like a spy, I watched where I stepped and stuck to the shadows. Once a break in the dense canopy opened, I looked up to find the moon at its peak fullness. Unexpectedly, my arms tingled, and the sensation traveled up to my shoulders.

Uh-oh. I hadn’t felt that since I was in Havenwood Falls, but I knew it meant I was near a witch. I thought I was alone out here. More carefully, I headed toward the people. If I was near more people, perhaps I had a better chance of blending in. Almost to the edge of the park, I felt the warmth at the back of my neck too late before I saw the shadow of someone up ahead. A hunter. Not knowing who it was, I kept my guard up. Of course they had felt me, because everyone was better at being a hunter than I was. Did I take my chance with them? Or head the opposite way and try to avoid the witch? I recalled what Charlie and Rachel had said earlier: when the hunter surfaced for the first real time on their own, they could lose control.

Taking my chance with the witch, I turned and hightailed it as fast as I could go away from the hunter. I had no idea where the park ended or if it even did. Outlines of mountains in the distance were visible in the moonlight. Distinguishing if there was a river or thicker, denser trees was almost impossible from my location. Someone watched me; I felt eyes all around me, closing in on me. Similar to the feelings I experienced earlier at the house, the nausea and dizziness came over me, but so much more intense.

My vision blurred. I heard things on either side of me that didn’t sound natural, but I couldn’t be sure. My stomach rolled. A new sensation, one of epically toxic proportions, punched me in the gut.
